Rain gods and their relatives developed out of an earlier tradition of larger hollow clay figurines, the earliest of which was collected at Tesuque Pueblo in 1879. They continue to be produced at Tesuque Pueblo to this day, constituting the longest continuous figurative art tradition in the Southwest. This book traces the evolution of the rain god from tourist art to Indian self-identity and self-expression. Importantly, it studies a popular form that has heretofore failed to earn the serious attention of scholars and collecting institutions and further the discourse on how art is defined and valued.144pp.Rear cover corner slightly creased.

Previous owner's signature on ffep.Little attention has traditionally been given to theorising heterosexuality. Heterosexuality tends to be taken-for-granted, as something that is 'natural' and 'normal'. Theorising Heterosexuality questions this assumption and demonstrates how much of our understanding of ourselves and the social worlds we inhabit is based upon unquestioned assumptions about the nature of heterosexuality. * In what ways does heterosexuality encode and structure everyday life? * How does heterosexuality shape our sense of identity? * What is the nature of heterosexual desire? * What is the relationship between heterosexuality and feminism? In addition to addressing these questions, the contributors to Theorising Heterosexuality provide a critical examination of recent debates about heterosexuality, in particular within postmodern, feminist and Queer theory. Well written in a clear and lively style, this book brings together leading authors in the field, who represent a variety of differing approaches and viewpoints. Heterosexuality is theorised in terms of its institutionalisation within society and culture, as practice and as identity. The result is an impressive and exciting collection, whose insights invite a radical rethinking of many of the concepts we use to theorise social relations. Theorising Heterosexuality will be of interest to a wide range of students in the social sciences and humanities, especially in: sociology, cultural studies, lesbian and gay studies, social psychology and women's studies.204pp

This volume collects a number of essays and articles from experts in various fields connected to marine environmental issues. These essays were first presented at the XXVIII Pacem in Maribus Conference held in December 2000, at the International Tribunal of the Law of the Sea in Hamburg, Germany. The purpose of the Conference was to enhance awareness of the European public, governments, the private sector and academia about the importance of responsible ocean and coastal management based on ocean science. Reflecting the innovative interdisciplinary approach of the conference, these volume groups contributors from leading biologists, political scientists, geographers, and jurists according to specific regional relevance and not along strict disciplinary lines. This approach allows the experts to treat marine issues concerning regions such as the North Sea, the Baltic Sea, or the Black Sea in a comprehensive manner. 334pp.
