Donaldson, Laura E.
Perhaps the greatest challenge to feminism in recent decades has emerged from the Black or Third World women's movement, which charges that the work of White middle-class feminists is often complicit with the agendas of White supremacy and Anglo-Saxon imperialism. In "Decolonializing Feminisms" Laura Donaldson's analysis aims to show how the oppositional stances of `First' versus `Third' world, and `traditional' versus `postmodern' feminists, can be brought into a more supportive relationship. Donaldson places contemporary theoretical debates about reading, writing, and the politics of identity, within the context of historical colonialism. Her readings of the work of Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte, and such films as "A Passage to India", reveal the subtle inter-relationships of gender, race, class, religion and sexual practice. 175pp. N.B. Edited By Coulton,G.R. And De Belleroche,J.
In situ hybridization has developed as a means of localizing specific DNA and RNA sequences within tissues. The great strength of this approach is the ability to relate the distribution of specific nucleic acids with cell structures and the protein products of the target gene by means of immunohistochemistry. Complementary DNA, RNA or oligo-nucleotide probes, suitably labelled, are hybridized to specific DNA or RNA targets within tissues. The spatial information thus obtained has contributed greatly to our understanding of such diverse areas of research as gene mapping, viral infection, cytogenetics, protein synthesis, prenatal diagnosis and tissue grafting. This book is not intended as another recipe book, although it does describe theoretical and practical aspects of the technology. Rather, the authors critically describe the contribution made by in situ hybridization to specific areas of medical research. 116pp.Slight fade mark to base of spine.

Hindle Hazen, Margaret & M.Hazen, Robert
To examine the cultural context of fire in "combustible America" gathered more than 100 illustrations, most never before published, together with anecdotes and information from hundreds of original sources, including newspapers, diaries, company records, popular fiction, art and music. The result is an encyclopaedic history that ranges from stories of the tragic 'great fires' of the century to fire imagery in folktales and popular literature. Dealing more with technology than with fire in nature, the book provides a vast amount of information on fire manipulation and prevention in everyday life, discussing the people who worked with fire and against it. 281pp.
