Duchen, Claire
Women's Rights and Women's Lives In France explores the everyday experiences of women between the liberation, and May 1968. In 1945, French women believed that a new era was beginning for them, in which they had finally won equality (the right to vote in 1944, equal pay and access to education and employment). But the new Republic considered that women's main role was that of motherhood. Competing visions of women's place had concrete implications for women's lives, influencing work, politics and ideals of femininity. Working from a wide range of sources, including women's magazines, prescriptive literature, political pamphlets, fiction and memoirs, and government reports, Claire Duchen follows the debates concerning women through twenty years, and grounds them in the changing social reality of postwar France. 253pp. N.B. Cable, Ted T.
A fascinating and thought provoking journey into West Africa through the eyes of the people who have dedicated their lives to helping preserve the natural habitat of West Africa. This book describes the work of individuals who have devoted their lives to preserving a richly diverse, beautiful, and prosperous world for future generations of West Africans. The book's purposes are to honor these dedicated conservationists and to offer them as inspirational role models for those considering joining the ranks of conservationists. By describing the places, the issues, and the challenges facing these individuals, this book presents a snapshot of West Africa conservation as we begin the twenty-first century. Eighteen different profiles cover a gamut of topics such as: Trees for Timbuktu, Forests for the Future, Championing Chimpanzees, Endangered Species, National Parks, and the Politics of Conservation. While the economy and politics of this great country keep changing you will feel an involvement in these conservation efforts right from the start of this book.

Horowitz, Asher
Asher Horowitz explores the philosophies of Levinas and the critical theorists of the Frankfurt School, demonstrating the ways in which their works diverge from and complement each other. As Horowitz explains, the manner in which these thinkers are here related to each other resembles Adorno's suggestion, or even program, for thinking in constellations. Demonstrating an authoritative command of both the thinkers themselves - including Benjamin, Horkheimer, and Marcuse - and the various philosophical contexts (German idealism, phenomenology, Marxism, psychoanalysis) in which they are embedded, Horowitz offers a politically thoughtful and philosophically provocative analysis based on a wide range of texts and a critical reconstruction and confrontation between the positions. While a few studies have previously addressed the philosophical relationship between Levinas and Adorno, in particular, "Ethics at a Standstill" is unique in arguing that each of these ways of thinking calls forth from the other, respectively, a social-critical and ethical supplement that is insufficiently developed in their own work. 404pp.
