Problem-oriented policing has been one of the most significant new approaches to policing and crime reduction in recent years, and in the UK significant funding was provided to a variety of projects adopting a problem solving methodology in both policing and crime prevention and reduction partnerships as part of the government's Crime Reduction Programme. This book aims to draw upon the main findings of this initiative, to provide an overview of the government's Targeted Policing Initiative as a whole, to describe findings about the adoption of a problem solving approach, and to indicate what was learned from efforts to address the specific problems targeted in the evaluated initiatives. 311pp. N.B. Jannuzzi, Michele; Smith, Richard
Technological advances have changed not only the constraints and possibilities of individual media, but the interplay between media, and our expectations. Never before have we had the potential to channel and cross-reference such a wealth and diversity of information; and never before have we been posed such difficult questions about how information is structured, delivered, and accessed; about who sees what, where, and for how long. Designers not only have to be successful in designing for this medium and that medium but in making them work in tandem with each other, without tautology or contradiction. A cross-media approach involves media selection, optimisation, and articulation to define effective and efficient strategies for the delivery of information, where each medium is played according to its strengths. In this environment everyone is a prospector: everything is up for grabs. This book illustrates these themes through the working methodology of Jannuzzi Smith, one of Europe's most innovative and influential design studios.

Holzinger, Johannes Peter
This book features text in English and German. Linking art and architecture is one of the great Utopias of our century. Art has been released from its traditional bonds and sees itself faced with a world that has made systems independent to the extent that a link between art and building based on the idea of unity is no longer admissible. The collapse of our 'world into pieces' also typifies that situation of the arts looking for new orders. Now, artist-architect Johannes Peter Holzinger, in co-operation with artists Eberhard Fiebig, Ottmar Horl/Formalhaut, Leonardo Mosso, Norbert Muller-Everling, Ansgar Nierhoff and Andreas Sobeck, working on the government buildings on the Hardthohe in Bonn, has succeeded in creating 'an avant-garde landmark that shows in the interplay of the arts that the avant-garde can also work positively in a team', as Dieter Ronte, director of the Stadtisches Kunstmuseum Bonn, put it in a contribution to this book. Holzinger links heterogeneous artistic positions in attempting an order of the different. The art in the outer areas of the complex mediates between the surroundings and the buildings. The visual signing system leads further into the centres, which are the same shape, of the existing administrative buildings, and creates some thing that is unmistakable there. The special structures designed by Holzinger, an intermediate form of architecture and landscape developed from the relief, include the earth itself, and in the casino architecture and art combine to form an indissoluble unit. 71pp.N.B.Slight mark on front d/j.
