Greer (editor); Forbes (editor); Turpie, A. G. (editor)
Complications due to bleeding and thrombosis are associated with many of the major clinical problems faced in obstetric and gynaecological practice. This book provides a comprehensive review of these problems by an international panel of authors active in clinical practice, teaching and research in their topics. The book deals with the physiology of haemostasis and blood rheology in general, the changes seen in normal pregnancy and the development of the coagulation system in the foetus. Obstetric and gynaecological haemorrhage is reviewed both from the viewpoint of the clinical obstetrician and gynaecologist, and the haematologist. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of thrombosis in pregnancy is dealt with over several chapters. These highlight the problems peculiar to the pregnant situation and their management, such as the effects of anticoagulants on the fetus and the often neglected area of the longterm outcome for women suffering from venous thromboembolism in association with pregnancy. Congenital and acquired disorders of haemostasis and thrombosis in relation to gynaecological practice, the pregnant situation, and the foetus and neonate, including prenatal diagnosis, are examined, providing information and experience of the management of these problems. Also covered is the common problem of menorrhagia and the relationship between the oral contraception pill and hormone replacement therapy and thrombosis. 573pp.

Duchen, Claire
Women's Rights and Women's Lives In France explores the everyday experiences of women between the liberation, and May 1968. In 1945, French women believed that a new era was beginning for them, in which they had finally won equality (the right to vote in 1944, equal pay and access to education and employment). But the new Republic considered that women's main role was that of motherhood. Competing visions of women's place had concrete implications for women's lives, influencing work, politics and ideals of femininity. Working from a wide range of sources, including women's magazines, prescriptive literature, political pamphlets, fiction and memoirs, and government reports, Claire Duchen follows the debates concerning women through twenty years, and grounds them in the changing social reality of postwar France. 253pp. N.B. Williamson, John G.
Rabies is a viral neuroinvasive disease that causes acute encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) in warm-blooded animals. It is zoonotic (i.e., transmitted by animals), most commonly by a bite from an infected animal but occasionally by other forms of contact. Rabies is almost invariably fatal if post-exposure prophylaxis is not administered prior to the onset of severe symptoms. It is a significant killer of livestock in some countries. The rabies virus travels to the brain by following the peripheral nerves. This book gathers together important new research in the field. 157pp.

Zhou, Zhongfei
This work conducts a critical examination of Chinese foreign banking law in the context of the international convergence of supervisory standards and practices. If China is to develop a modern and viable banking sector, it needs to put in place a suitable legal infrastructure which is consistent with emerging international supervisory standards, WTO requirements and aspirations for financial sector liberalization. The author argues that the current foreign banking laws are fundamentally out of line with international standards and practices in a number of respects and that legislators and supervisors do not at present appreciate or cultivate commonly accepted supervisory values. The author therefore proposes a set of reforms that would at the same time create a legal environment for competitive equality between foreign banks and protect the safety and soundness of the Chinese banking system. The issues considered include the licensing process for the entry of foreign banks into the Chinese market, the ongoing regulation of foreign banks and foreign bank crisis management or bank failure resolution. The author offers a proposed framework of Chinese foreign banking law which should be of great benefit to existing and prospective foreign banks in China. 241pp.
