This book provides updated knowledge on the basic features and mechanisms of cellular aging established since its first manifestation at cellular level 40 years ago. Contributions of genetic and environmental factors, failure of genetic and cellular repair mechanisms, and the epigenetic modifications determine the final lifespan of cells. This book also provides an understanding on how aging mechanisms in mice, a most frequently used model, differ with that of humans who receive better tumor surveillance because of stringent controls on aging mechanisms. It also appraises the use of modern technology for aging studies and its intervention. This book serves as an excellent reading on cellular aging for undergraduate students, researchers and experts of this area. 276pp.Biology of Aging and Its Modulation Volume 2.

This volume presents the proceedings of the Falk Symposium No. 127 on "Autoimmune Diseases in Paediatric Gastroenterology" (IV International Falk Symposium on Paediatric Gastroenterology), held in Basel, Switzerland, on November 8-9, 2001. The symposium focused on the role of the immune system, both the acquired and the innate systems, in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in children and adolescents. The innate system has an important fundamental role in host defence by initiating immune responses against potentially deleterious matter. However, a mutation within the innate system may elicit an immune response against the host: hence, an autoimmune response. Chronic autoimmune hepatitis occurs predominantly in young people, and especially in women. Immunological changes are conspicuous. Tissue antibodies are found in a large number of patients. This is a disease of disordered immunoregulation marked by a deficit in suppressor T cells causing the production of autoantibodies against specific hepatocyte surface antigen. Liver membrane protein is found in the sera of patients with autoimmune chronic acute hepatitis and with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC).256pp.Slight fade mark to base of d/j spine.

Blau, Joseph L.
A reprint of the 1954 Bobbs-Merrill edition. History's first national party with roots in a mass electorate, the Jacksonian Democrats were not so much unified around a shared policy program as they were a patchwork of conflicting interests. They came together most vigorously in the name of what they opposed: the emerging financial and commercial monopolies, the old Washington dynasty, and any whiff of privilege or aristocracy. Yet they demonstrated how even unprincipled national parties could invigorate representative democracy and repair the growing rifts between Northern industrialists, the Old South, and the developing West. These texts show the Jacksonian movement as a cross-section of nineteenth century America. A picture of popular democracy in its infancy, they together form a study of unity in diversity. 383pp.
