Aristophanes; Ruden, Sarah (translator)
Aristophanes' comic masterpiece of war and sex remains one of the greatest plays ever written. Led by the title character, the women of the warring city-states of Greece agree to withhold sexual favours with their husbands until they agree to cease fighting. The war of the sexes that ensues makes 'Lysistrata' a comedy without peer in the history of theatre. 126pp.

The study of soil nitrogen has long been an active field, but it was generally pivoted on agricultural and forestry production, and animal husbandry. With the rapid increase in the use of fertilizer nitrogen, more attention has been paid to the relationship between nitrogen management and environmental quality and human health. In addition, the study of soil nitrogen has become more comprehensive with the development of related sciences. The quantitative study of the processes of nitrogen cycling and their interrelationships has been an important part of this project and has attracted the attention of scientists all over the world. Nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth and the application of fertilizer nitrogen is playing an important role in agricultural production. The annual consumption of fertilizer nitrogen in the world has reached 70 million tons, and China has an annual consumption of more than 15 million tons and is the largest fertilizer nitrogen consumer in the world. However, the efficiency of fertilizer nitrogen is low and losses are large. It is estimated that nitrogen losses from agriculture in China can be as high as 40-60% of the nitrogen applied. Some of the lost nitrogen enters the atmosphere and contributes to the greenhouse effect and some enters water bodies to pollute the water. Consequently, it is important for scientists all over the world to improve the efficiency of use of fertilizer nitrogen, to promote the biological fixation of nitrogen and to increase the nitrogen-supplying potential of soils. 338pp.

Said, Edward W.
A 'beginning,' especially as embodied in much modern thought, is its own method, Edward Said argues in this classic treatise on the role of the intellectual and the goal of criticism. Distinguishing between 'origin', which is divine, mythical, and privileged, and 'beginning,' which is secular and humanly produced, Said traces the ramifications and diverse understandings of the concept of beginning through history. A beginning is a first step in the intentional production of meaning and the production of difference from preexisting traditions. It authorizes subsequent texts - it both enables them and limits what is acceptable. Drawing on the insights of Vico, Valery, Nietzsche, Saussure, Levi-Strauss, Husserl, and Foucault, Said recognizes the novel as the major attempt in Western literary culture to give beginnings an authorizing function in experience, art, and knowledge.Scholarship should see itself as a beginning - as a uniting of theory and practice. Said's insistence on a criticism that is humane and socially responsible is what makes "Beginnings" a book about much more than writing: it is about imagination and action as well as the constraints on freedom and invention that come from human intention and the method of its fulfillment. 414pp. N.B. Edited By Hagan, Kay Leigh
Women today are paying close attention to the men's movement as it radiates out from the US. Some of them like what they see and hope that men at home are coming to terms with the realities of true partnership and shared power, others are downright sceptical, complaining about the chorus of whining white men. Still others hold a deep-rooted fear that the men's movement has only legitimized a fashionable new form of woman-hating. This book looks at the men's movement, with contributions from women writers such as Nicole Hollander, Rosemary Radfors Ruether and Starhawk. By the author of "International Affairs: a Journalkeeping Workbook for Self-Intimacy" and "Habit of Freedom". 175pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep.
