Penalosa, Enrique
Throughout the recorded history of Bogotį, from the earliest Spanish chronicles to present-day photographs, films and television programs, the Cerros Orientales or Eastern Ridges of the city have been an indelible feature of its landscape, culture and social life. But up to now the citizens of Bogotį have known little about their tutelary mountains and have rarely given them the value they deserve. For the Muisca indigenous society, the original inhabitants of the region, who regarded these ridges as a magical and holy place, the mountains were part of a living nature, superior to the human realm and the site for their most important shrines and ceremonial center. After the Spanish Conquest, the Eastern Ridges lost the sacred role they had had in the Pre-Columbian world. In response to the needs imposed by the development of a new city that was formed in the image of Western society, other cultural and religious symbols were placed on these mountains and the uncontrolled exploitation of their natural wealth began. As a result, their true value as an environmental reserve was ignored. For these reasons, there is an urgent need to examine the Cerros Orientales once more with the attitude of love and respect of their earliest inhabitants - the Native American dwellers of the Savannah of Bogotį, who were protected and inspired by them. 289pp.
