Olver, Ian N.
This is an original contribution to the much debated area of the value that we should place on human life. With the euthanasia issue highlighted in the public arena this book argues for a non-absolutist highest value on life ethic and how that fits with society's current emphasis on individual autonomy. Not only are the arguments for and against placing a highest value on life explored but the way of arguing particularly the use of slippery slopes is discussed. By the use of everyday examples the impact of placing a high value on life is explored. A futuristic intensive care ward round illustrates the ethical and resource issues with which we would be challenged in adopting a highest value on life policy for medical decisions. This book will be useful for students of ethics, nursing and medicine as well as those engaged in the public debate on euthanasia. 165pp.

Our groundwater is a vital resource which, despite its scarcity in many areas, such as the Mediterranean, is everywhere threatened by pollution and other hazards. Conservation and better management of this invisible resource should thus be a key ingredient of any sustainable water policy. The future is bound to see increasing competition between freshwater use and users, such as agriculture, an industry that not only extracts a great deal of groundwater but also threatens it with pollution. Agricultural policies have traditionally had other objectives, but environmental considerations are starting to play a greater role, but more effective initiatives will be needed to reduce pressure on groundwater resources and to better integrate agricultural and environmental policies. The present book, written by researchers drawn from different but complementary fields, presents a review of the interlinkages between agriculture and groundwater, and a critical review of alternative regulatory approaches and policy instruments for the better management of groundwater. 301pp.

From time immemorial, culture, education, and training have been assigned an essential role in preserving and developing common values that tie the international community together. Distinguished documents of international conferences and in various treaty texts and protocols show how cultural policy is the pre-eminent driving force for improvement of the intangible quality of individual and social life. Culture and education make an immeasurable contribution to the integration of a person in society and to the European society as such. Also from time immemorial, the principles of freedom and equality find their application in cultural and educational policy. Both support the rights to social multiformity and to protection of minorities; both also remind us that certain human values transgress every "local" culture. This volume considers in detail not only the recent trends in the organization and structure of art education, but also the interplay between the two within standard education, the application of the principle of freedom of movement and mobility of teachers and students, the equivalence of diplomas, and so forth.
