Mitscherling, Jeff
This absorbing study of Plato's criticism of poetry offers a new interpretation based upon central features of both the pre-Platonic conception of poetry and previously neglected features of Plato's various discussions of poetry and the poets. Professor Mitscherling's analysis is unique in that he concentrates on the philosophical significance of Plato's distinction between dramatic and non-dramatic sorts of poetry. Mitscherling shows that this distinction proves in fact to be central to the conception of poetry that Plato consistently elaborates throughout his dialogues. Mitscherling also makes a unique contribution by outlining a possible Platonic aesthetics, which draws on current work in phenomenology and hermeneutics in such a way as to promise an entirely new direction for current work in continental aesthetics. The author employs Gadamer's analyses of the ontology of the work of art, in conjunction with a phenomenological analysis of the aesthetic experience, in the construction of a foundation for aesthetics that is consistently Platonic. Mitscherling concludes with the hypothesis that Plato's criticism of poetry did not apply to poetry itself, nor was it directed to art in general or the educational system, or the Sophists. Rather, Plato was specifically against the technic of mimesis, that is, the technique of persuading by appearing to be what one is not, or by merely appearing to speak the truth.479pp.

Meaney, Gerardine
Previous owners inscription to ffep."(Un)like Subjects" aims to present a significant new model for the relationship between women and writing; and theory and fiction. Gerardine Meaney addresses the issues of style and female relationships which have preoccupied the three most influential French feminist theorists and three contemporary women novelists. Meaney traces the connections between the theorists, Helene Cixous, Luce Irigaray and Julia Kristeva, and the literary practitioners, Doris Lessing, Muriel Spark and Angela Carter. Her reading of the work of these six women writers traces a new vision of femininity as expressed through literature, and demonstrates how theoretical and literary texts can reflect and illuminate each other. "(Un)like Subjects" is a book designed to provide readers with a new way forward in theorizing femininity. Opening up a relatively unexplored method of argument, it could be central to future discussions on the relationships within and between women's writings.255pp.

Gallagher, Peter
As the ultimate arbiter in the global trade regime, the dispute settlement system of the World Trade Organization (WTO) is a body whose workings should be known to business people and their counsel everywhere. Here is a book - reviewed for accuracy by the WTO but written independently - that provides an uncomplicated but thorough explanation of the system, its purpose, its rules, and the role it plays in the management of the international economy. Peter Gallagher, a former trade negotiator and a specialist in the Uruguay Round agreements, answers such questions as: what sort of disputes does the WTO deal with?; can business or citizens use the WTO dispute system?; is it possible to get a temporary injunction to stop some action?; how much does it cost a to bring a case?; how far can you keep on appealing a decision?; what processes does a Panel follow?; what does the Appellate Body review?; what process does the Appellate Body follow?; how does intervention by other parties affect a dispute? As a handy guide to "bringing a case" before the WTO, or responding to a case already in progress, this easy-to-use book should prove an ideal starting point for lawyers, business people, or government officials confronted with a disputable trade issue. 148pp.
