Edited By Coulton,G.R. And De Belleroche,J.
In situ hybridization has developed as a means of localizing specific DNA and RNA sequences within tissues. The great strength of this approach is the ability to relate the distribution of specific nucleic acids with cell structures and the protein products of the target gene by means of immunohistochemistry. Complementary DNA, RNA or oligo-nucleotide probes, suitably labelled, are hybridized to specific DNA or RNA targets within tissues. The spatial information thus obtained has contributed greatly to our understanding of such diverse areas of research as gene mapping, viral infection, cytogenetics, protein synthesis, prenatal diagnosis and tissue grafting. This book is not intended as another recipe book, although it does describe theoretical and practical aspects of the technology. Rather, the authors critically describe the contribution made by in situ hybridization to specific areas of medical research. 116pp.Slight fade mark to base of spine.

Cohen, Yoel
This work is a charged revealing examination of the historical events surrounding the London "Sunday Times" headline of October 5, 1986: "Revealed: the secrets of Israel's nuclear arsenal". Mordechai Vanunu, was a former technician at Israel's secret nuclear research centre at Dimona, and had made public highly classified information about Israel's nuclear research program; for this he was kidnapped by the Mossad, subjected to a closed doors trial, convicted of espionage and treason, and subjected to an eighteen-year sentence. A careful and meticulous study of the Vanunu affair, this startling expose involves Israel's intelligence community, and draws from thousands of pages of court transcripts and testimony connected to the case. "The Whistleblower of Dimona" is compelling and strongly recommended reading - especially in light of contemporary international events in the Middle East. Some rubbing to rear board.368pp.

Atkins, Annette
Each chapter of this innovative state history focuses on a telling detail, a revealing incident, or a meaningful issue that illuminates a larger event, social trends, or politics during a period in Minnesota's history. A three-act play about Minnesota's statehood vividly depicts the competing interests of Natives, traders, and politicians who lived in the same territory but moved in different worlds. Oranges are the focal point of a chapter about railroads and transportation: how did a St Paul family manage to celebrate their 1898 Christmas with fruit that grew no closer than 1,500 miles from their home? A photo essay brings to life three communities of the 1920s, seen through the lenses of local and itinerant photographers. The much-sought state fish helps to explain the new Minnesota, where pan-fried walleye and walleye quesadillas coexist on the same north woods menu.In "Creating Minnesota" Atkins invites readers to experience the texture of people's lives through the decades, offering a fascinating and unparalleled approach to the history of the state.
