This Volume of the Series is devoted to aging at the organismic level. Different levels of organisation, ranging from single cell organisms (yeast) to humans are included. In addition to the currently most important model systems like yeast, filamentous fungi, Caenorabditis elegans, flies and mice, other systems like sponges and plants are discussed. Most importantly, research using different aging models can be expected to unravel the most important basic mechanisms of aging that are conserved in all species. In addition, a critical discussion of what can be expected from this kind of strategy for the understanding of aging in humans is included. This book serves as excellent reading for graduate students, scientists in medical research, medical doctors, researchers in pharmacological fields, researchers, biologists, and experts of this area.276pp.Biology of Aging and Its Modulation Volume 4.

Bellamy, Nicholas
Despite more than 50 years' experience with outcome measurement in musculoskeletal clinical trials, there is little conformity in the methods used, and no standard text on clinical metrology exists. This text reviews the methods used to assess the clinical efficacy of antirheumatic drugs in adult patients with musculoskeletal disease, focusing primarily on clinical rather than laboratory or radiographic measures. There are four parts: overviews of fundamental issues in clinical metrology; of outcome measures relevant to antirheumatic drugs: a review of current clinimetric practices in rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and fibromyalgia clinical trials; and a discussion of different measurement techniques. The text is complemented by many illustrations and three appendices. This study should be of interest to all involved in evaluating treatment strategies for musculoskeletal patients, as well as those involved in the development and regulation of antirheumatic drugs. 367pp.N.B.Small fade mark at base of spine.

Edited By Roces, Mina and Edwards, Louise
This book explores the ways in which dress has been influential in the political agendas and self-representations of politicians in a variety of regimes from democratic to authoritarian. Arguing that dress is part of 'hard core' politics, it shows how dress has been crucial to the constructions of nationhood and national identities in both Asia and the Americas. Since dress has been a marker of identity and status, chapters engage with the gendering of the politics of dress, discussing how women have become bearers and wearers of 'national tradition' and how men and women's dress reflect their political positions in the nation-state. It examines the magical power of cloth, the meanings of batik and design, the holy status of uncut cloth versus cut cloth, and the quaint combination of non-Western with Western attire. This collection of pioneering essays fills a vacuum in the largely Eurocentric field of dress studies, demanding that attention be paid to Asia and the Americas as major sites of vestimentary creativity. 276pp.
