Edited By Kaplan, E. Ann and Sprinker, Michael
On his death in October 1990, Louis Althusser remained one of the most controversial of the "master thinkers" to emerge from the Parisian intellectual scene of the 1960s. "The Althusserian Legacy" is a collective attempt to draw up a balance sheet, not on Althusser alone but on the questions that his work pushed to the forefront of Marxist theory. It brings together writing in history, philosophy, economics, sociology, and literary criticism, all of it deriving from or significantly inflected by Althusser. The volume contains an interview with Jacques Derrida, long-time friend and colleague of Althusser at the Ecole Normale in Paris, and concludes with two obituaries by Derrida and Gregory Elliott. The contributors include - Etienne Balibar, Alex Callinicos, Michele Barrett, Alain Lipietz and Gregory Elliott. 245pp. N.B. Previous owners inscription to ffep. Reading crease to spine.

Butcher, Bruce S.
Written from the perspective of a practising company lawyer, this work is principally concerned with two broad duties owed by directors of British and Australian companies: to act honestly, in good faith and for proper purposes; and to exercise care and diligence. Public attitudes towards directors have altered since the mid-1980s, and the business community has raised its expectations of directors. In response to this shift in public feeling, parliament and the judiciary are adopting a new approach to directors' duties, widening the scope of duties imposed on directors and encouraging a more rigorous approach to corporate governance. This text analyzes this new approach, with reference to English and Australian case-law, and explores the courts' attempts to deal with the myriad of competing interests found within the morass of legal rules, equitable principles and statutory enactment which comprise modern company law. In examining modern case-law and legislation, the author addresses some of the more contentious and controversial issues which directors in the 21st century will need to confront in order to properly discharge the legal, equitable and statutory requirements of their office. The subject of directors' duties is of theoretical and practical importance, from economic, political as well as social perspectives. This text should be of use to all lawyers, policymakers, academics and researchers working in this complex and rapidly changing field of the law. 379pp.

Zhivov, Victor
Victor Zhivov's magisterial "Language and Culture in Eighteenth-Century Russia" tells the story of the creation of a new vernacular literary language in modern Russia, an achievement arguably on a par with the nation's extraordinary military successes, territorial expansion, development of the arts and formation of a modern empire. The language served as the primary vehicle for Russia's modernization and for its entry into the Western European cultural sphere, and Zhivov demonstrates that the unusually intense debates over it, down to violent disagreements over particular grammatical endings, have profound implications for understanding the basic social, political, and cultural dynamics of the era. "Language and Culture" analyzes the European theories concerning modern literary languages that were transplanted into Russia and demonstrates the ways in which they were creatively transformed when adapted to the complex legacy of medieval and seventeenth-century literary culture. Zhivov traces this creative adaptation from the "hybrid Slavonic" of the late seventeenth century; through Peter the Great's demand for a new Russian vernacular literary language; to the "Slaveno-Russian" linguistic and cultural synthesis of mid-century and the beginnings of a Russian literary tradition; to the early nineteenth-century debates between "archaists and innovators"; and fi nally to the subsequent decoupling of secular and religious language and culture that in his view represented the last echo of eighteenth-century debates. Language and Culture in Eighteenth-Century Russia fundamentally revises much of the received wisdom concerning the development of the literary language and offers fundamentally new perspectives on the genesis and development of modern Russian language, literature, and culture. 506pp. N.B. Head and tail of spine and D/J spine very slightly bumped.
